How Does WiFi Setup Work on the Star TSP100IV X4?

The wireless version of the Star TSP100IV, identified as TSP143IV-UEWB, includes wireless LAN as well as Bluetooth, Ethernet/LAN and USB connectivity.

Star provides the Star Quick Setup Utility for supported iOS and Android devices to simplify printer configuration. According to Star, the application guides the user through wireless LAN setup from a mobile device.

This guide explains the basic process and, importantly, what should be checked before assuming that connecting the printer to WiFi will automatically make it work with a particular POS or ordering system.

Overview

Connecting a receipt printer to WiFi involves two separate considerations:

  1. Connecting the printer to the required wireless network.
  2. Ensuring the POS software, application or printing system can communicate with the printer using that network configuration.

A successful WiFi connection by itself does not guarantee compatibility with every POS application.

Star specifically notes that the system being used must also support the selected communication method.

Before You Start

Check the exact printer model.

For WiFi operation, the important designation is:

TSP143IV-UEWB

The UEWB model adds wireless LAN and Bluetooth to the USB and LAN connectivity available within the TSP100IV family.

Before configuration, also have the following information available:

Wireless network name (SSID)

Step 1 — Install Star Quick Setup Utility

Install Star Quick Setup Utility on a compatible iOS or Android mobile device.

Step 2 — Turn On the TSP100IV

Connect the printer to power and switch it on.

Allow the printer to complete its normal startup process before beginning network configuration.

If the printer has previously been configured for another network or communication method, its existing settings may affect the setup process.

Avoid resetting or initializing communication settings unnecessarily, particularly on a printer that is already part of a working POS environment.

Step 3 — Open Star Quick Setup Utility

Open Star Quick Setup Utility on the mobile device.

Depending on the printer's existing configuration, firmware and device being used, the screens presented during setup may vary.

Step 4 — Configure the Wireless Network

Within the setup process, select the required wireless network and enter the appropriate network credentials when requested.

SSID / network name
WiFi password
Network being used by the POS environment

An incorrect password or selection of the wrong wireless network can prevent successful communication even when the printer itself is functioning normally.

The POS application must support the printer and the intended network printing method.

What If the Printer Connects to WiFi but Does Not Print?

If network configuration appears successful but the POS system does not print, check the system logically rather than immediately changing printer settings.

Verify:

Printer is powered on
Printer and host environment are using the intended network
Correct printer is selected in the application
POS software supports the printer
Network printing is supported by the application
Required Star driver, SDK or integration is available
Network or firewall configuration is not preventing communication
Printer IP/network configuration is appropriate for the installation

Star also provides Web Configuration for certain network settings and maintains dedicated drivers, software, manuals and utilities for the TSP100IV.

Should You Use WiFi, Ethernet, USB or Bluetooth?

WiFi is useful where running an Ethernet cable to the printer is inconvenient or where the installation benefits from wireless network connectivity.

However, wireless is not automatically the correct connection for every POS environment.
