Overview
The AXIS M4216-LV Dome Camera is a compact indoor 4 MP network camera designed for applications where adjustable viewing coverage, low-light performance, integrated infrared illumination and edge-based analytics are required.
It uses a 1/2.7-inch progressive scan RGB CMOS sensor and a 3–6 mm F1.9–2.7 varifocal lens. The lens provides a horizontal field of view ranging from 100° to 45° and a vertical field of view from 72° to 34°.
Remote zoom and remote focus simplify adjustment after installation, while the camera's maximum 2304 × 1728 resolution provides 4 MP video at up to 25/30 fps in H.264 and H.265.
For low-light and night surveillance, the M4216-LV combines Axis Lightfinder, WDR and OptimizedIR. Integrated 855 nm IR LEDs provide a specified reach of 20 m (65.6 ft) or more depending on the scene.
A built-in deep learning processing unit (DLPU) enables supported analytics to operate at the edge, including AXIS Object Analytics and AXIS Scene Metadata.

These specifications are taken from the supplied AXIS M4216-LV datasheet.
Varifocal Lens and Viewing Coverage
One of the important differences between the AXIS M4216-LV and a fixed-lens camera is its 3–6 mm varifocal lens.
At the wider end, the camera provides approximately:
Horizontal FoV: 100°
Vertical FoV: 72°
At the narrower end:
Horizontal FoV: 45°
Vertical FoV: 34°
This allows the viewing area to be adjusted according to the installation rather than requiring the installer to work with a single fixed field of view.
The camera also supports remote zoom and remote focus, which can simplify final framing and focusing during commissioning.
Low-Light and Night Surveillance
The AXIS M4216-LV combines three relevant imaging technologies:
Lightfinder helps the camera retain useful image information and color under low-light conditions.
WDR is designed for scenes containing both bright and dark areas. The datasheet specifies WDR of up to 110 dB depending on the scene.
OptimizedIR provides integrated infrared illumination for surveillance when visible illumination is insufficient.
The camera's IR LEDs operate at 855 nm, with Axis specifying a reach of 20 m (65.6 ft) or more depending on the scene.

The AXIS M4216-LV incorporates a deep learning processing unit (DLPU).
According to the supplied datasheet, included applications are:
- AXIS Live Privacy Shield
- AXIS Object Analytics
- AXIS Scene Metadata
- AXIS Video Motion Detection
- AXIS Face Detector
Supported applications listed by Axis also include:
- AXIS People Counter

Up to 10 scenarios are specified.
The analytics also support polygon include/exclude areas and perspective configuration.
AXIS Scene Metadata
AXIS Scene Metadata can provide structured information about detected objects.
The datasheet lists object classes including:
- Humans
- Faces
- Vehicles
- License plates
Available attributes include information such as vehicle color, upper/lower clothing color, confidence and position.
Actual analytics capability and results depend on scene conditions, configuration and software environment.
Video Compression and Streaming
The AXIS M4216-LV supports:
H.264: Main and High Profiles
H.265: Main and High Profiles
Motion JPEG
Multiple individually configurable streams are supported in H.264, H.265 and Motion JPEG.
The camera also supports Axis Zipstream technology with H.264 and H.265, along with controllable frame rate and bandwidth.
HDMI Output
An important feature of the AXIS M4216-LV is its integrated HDMI Type D output.
Supported output modes specified in the datasheet include:
1080p 16:9: 25/30 Hz
720p 16:9: 50/60 Hz
This may be useful where the camera image needs to be presented directly on a compatible local viewing display.
HDMI requirements and display compatibility should be checked before installation.
Audio and I/O Expansion
The camera can gain additional audio and I/O functionality using compatible AXIS T61 Audio and I/O Interfaces through Axis portcast technology.
The datasheet specifies support for:
- Two-way audio connectivity
- Voice enhancer
- Digital input through compatible AXIS T61 interfaces
- External output activation through compatible AXIS T61 interfaces
This capability should not be confused with having all audio/I/O ports physically integrated into the camera itself.
Edge Storage
The M4216-LV supports:
- microSD
- microSDHC
- microSDXC
- SD card encryption
- Network-attached storage (NAS)
Recording can therefore be configured locally or through compatible network storage depending on the surveillance architecture.
Required storage capacity should be calculated according to resolution, frame rate, codec, recording mode and retention period.

Things to Verify Before Ordering
Before ordering the AXIS M4216-LV, verify:
- Required resolution
- Required horizontal and vertical field of view
- Whether a 3–6 mm lens provides the required coverage
- Camera-to-subject distance
- Indoor installation environment
- Required night-viewing distance
- Available ambient lighting
- PoE switch or injector capability
- Required storage capacity
- VMS/NVR compatibility
- Required analytics
- HDMI requirements
- Whether audio or external I/O is required
- Whether an AXIS T61 interface is required
- Mounting location and required accessories
- Operating temperature
- Current product availability
This is especially important for surveillance equipment because resolution alone does not determine whether a camera will provide the required view or identification detail.
Who Should Consider the AXIS M4216-LV?
The M4216-LV may be suitable where the requirement calls for:
- 4 MP indoor surveillance
- Adjustable 3–6 mm varifocal coverage
- Remote zoom and focus
- Integrated infrared illumination
- Low-light imaging
- WDR
- Deep-learning edge analytics
- H.265 video
- PoE
- Local edge storage
- HDMI output
- Compact dome-camera installation
If outdoor exposure, substantially longer IR range, optical zoom or a different level of environmental protection is required, another model should be evaluated.
