A practical guide to understanding how a tablet, POS software, Star mPOP receipt printer and cash drawer, barcode scanner, customer display and payment terminal can work together at a compact checkout.

What Is a Star mPOP Tablet POS System?

A Star mPOP tablet POS system is not one single piece of equipment.

It is a collection of compatible components built around a tablet or similar device running point-of-sale software.

The Star mPOP can provide two important physical checkout functions within one compact enclosure:

58mm Receipt Printing

Cash Storage

The tablet provides the user interface and runs the POS application.

Other components can then be added only when the business requires them.

A basic architecture may look like this:

Tablet

POS Software

Star mPOP

Receipt Printing + Cash Drawer

A more complete checkout could become:

Tablet

POS Software

Star mPOP

Barcode Scanner

Customer Display

Payment Terminal

The important point is that these components need to work together.

Buying each piece separately without checking compatibility can result in a POS setup that looks complete physically but does not function correctly as a system.

Step 1: Start with the POS Software

It can be tempting to choose the hardware first.

For many tablet POS projects, however, the POS application should be one of the first decisions.

The software determines much of the checkout workflow, including functions such as:

  • Product management
  • Sales transactions
  • Receipt formatting
  • Tax configuration
  • Discounts
  • Staff accounts
  • Inventory
  • Customer records
  • Reporting
  • Payment integration

The first question therefore should not necessarily be:

“Which receipt printer should I buy?”

A better starting question can be:

“Which POS application will the business use, and which hardware does that application support?”

This helps reduce compatibility problems later.

Step 2: Choose the Tablet or Host Device

Once the POS software requirement is understood, consider the device that will run it.

Depending on the selected software, this might be:

  • iPad
  • Android tablet
  • Windows tablet
  • Windows computer
  • Another supported POS device

Current Star mPOP documentation identifies support for tablet POS environments including iOS, Android and Windows, while newer mPOPCBI technical documentation also identifies Linux and macOS environments.

However, operating-system support alone is not enough.

The complete combination must be considered:

Tablet Model

Operating System

POS Application

Connection Method

Star mPOP Model

Step 3: Decide How the Tablet Will Connect

Current mPOP configurations provide different connectivity choices.

USB-C

The newer mPOP platform provides USB-C Data & Charge functionality for supported devices.

This can be useful for a fixed checkout where the tablet remains at the counter.

A compatible arrangement may allow:

POS Communication

Tablet Charging

through the USB-C connection.

This can reduce unnecessary cables and help keep the checkout organized.

Star specifies USB-C Data & Charge for supported iOS and Android AOA devices on current mPOP configurations.

Bluetooth 5.0

The current mPOP10CBI / mPOPCBI configuration also provides Bluetooth 5.0.

This can be useful where the tablet should not remain physically connected to the mPOP throughout operation.

For example:

Tablet at Counter

Bluetooth

mPOP

The tablet may then have more positioning flexibility within the checkout area.

Neither USB-C nor Bluetooth is automatically the better choice.

The correct connection depends on the device, software and operating workflow.

Step 4: Understand What the mPOP Provides

The mPOP combines:

Receipt Printer

Cash Drawer

This is one of the main reasons it can help reduce the physical footprint of a tablet POS installation.

Current mPOP models use a 58mm direct thermal receipt printer with printing up to approximately 100 mm/sec, drop-in paper loading and an automatic cutter.

The integrated cash drawer provides configurable storage for notes and coins.

This eliminates the need to place a separate conventional receipt printer and separate cash drawer next to the tablet.

Step 5: Confirm That 58mm Receipts Are Suitable

This is an important decision that can easily be overlooked.

The mPOP uses 58mm thermal receipt paper.

It does not provide 80mm receipt printing.

Before selecting the mPOP, check the receipt format generated by the POS application.

Consider whether the receipt needs:

  • Product descriptions
  • Tax information
  • Company information
  • QR codes
  • Barcodes
  • Customer messages
  • Logos
  • Multiple payment details

58mm receipts can work well for compact transaction printing, but some businesses may prefer the additional width of an 80mm printer.

If 80mm printing is an important requirement, another Star printer architecture may be more appropriate.

Step 6: Decide Whether You Actually Need a Barcode Scanner

Not every POS system requires a scanner.

A café selling a relatively small menu, for example, may operate primarily through touchscreen selections.

A retail shop handling many packaged products may benefit considerably from barcode scanning.

A scanner can help with tasks such as:

  • Product identification
  • Checkout scanning
  • SKU lookup
  • Inventory workflows
  • Membership codes
  • Voucher codes

Star provides compatible barcode-scanner options within the mPOP ecosystem.

Before selecting one, determine whether you need:

1D Barcode Scanning

or

1D + 2D Barcode Scanning

A 2D scanner may be preferable where QR codes and other two-dimensional symbols form part of the workflow.

Step 7: Decide Whether a Customer Display Is Useful

A customer display is another optional component.

The Star SCD222 is available within the wider mPOP accessory ecosystem.

Depending on POS software support, a customer-facing display may help present transaction information at the checkout.

But it should not be added simply because the hardware supports it.

Ask:

Does our POS software support the display?

What information do we actually want customers to see?

Is there enough counter space?

Will the display improve our checkout workflow?

If the answer is no, the business may not need one.

Step 8: Treat Payment as a Separate Decision

The mPOP itself should not be confused with a payment terminal.

Its core physical functions are:

Receipt Printing

Cash Drawer

Electronic payments may require:

  • Card terminal
  • Merchant account
  • Payment application
  • Payment processor
  • Acquirer
  • POS/payment integration

The exact payment architecture depends on the business, POS application, payment provider and country.

Before purchasing the hardware, ask the POS and payment providers whether their current software versions support the intended mPOP configuration. Star specifically advises customers to verify current compatibility with their POS or payment provider.

Step 9: Plan the Physical Counter

A good POS system is not only about technical compatibility.

The physical arrangement matters too.

Consider:

  • Where will the operator stand?
  • Where will the customer stand?
  • Where will the tablet be positioned?
  • Can the cash drawer open completely?
  • Can receipt paper be replaced easily?
  • Where will the payment terminal sit?
  • Does the scanner need a stand?
  • Are cables protected?
  • Is mains power nearby?
  • Does the equipment obstruct customer interaction?

The mPOP measures approximately:

308 × 300 × 100 mm

Its relatively low profile allows it to fit into compact checkout environments, and Star also provides mounting and tablet-stand options within the ecosystem.

Step 10: Consider Under-Counter Installation

The mPOP does not necessarily need to occupy the main visible counter surface.

Star provides an under-counter mounting option for compatible installations.

This can be useful where a business wants the tablet to remain the primary visible component of the checkout.

However, the installation must still provide appropriate access for:

  • Receipt collection
  • Paper replacement
  • Cash drawer operation
  • Maintenance
  • Cable management

The physical installation should therefore be planned rather than improvised after purchasing the equipment.

What Does a Minimal mPOP Setup Need?

A simple configuration may require only:

1. Compatible Tablet

2. Compatible POS Application

3. Star mPOP

4. 58mm Thermal Paper

This may be sufficient for a business where products are selected directly on the touchscreen and cash is accepted.

What Does a More Complete Retail Setup Need?

A retail environment may instead use:

Tablet

POS Application

Star mPOP

Barcode Scanner

Customer Display

Payment Terminal

Tablet Stand

58mm Thermal Paper

The correct configuration depends on what the business actually needs.

More equipment does not automatically create a better POS system.

Where Can an mPOP Tablet POS Setup Make Sense?

Possible environments include:

  • Boutiques
  • Small retail stores
  • Cafés
  • Bakeries
  • Salons
  • Beauty studios
  • Reception counters
  • Pop-up stores
  • Food trucks
  • Exhibition sales counters
  • Street-food businesses
  • Service businesses

Star currently positions the mPOP particularly around compact tablet POS environments such as stores, cafés, salons, pop-ups and food-service/mobile environments.

When Might Another POS Architecture Be Better?

The mPOP is not automatically suitable for every business.

Consider another solution where you require:

  • 80mm receipt printing
  • Large receipt rolls
  • High-volume receipt production
  • Large-capacity cash storage
  • Integrated touchscreen computer
  • Built-in customer display
  • Specialized kitchen printing
  • Ethernet as a mandatory printer connection
  • Multiple networked checkout stations
  • A POS application that does not support mPOP

In these situations, a conventional POS terminal with separate peripherals or another Star printer family may provide a better architecture.

A Practical Compatibility Checklist

Before purchasing an mPOP system, verify:

POS Software: Exact application and version

Host Device: Exact tablet/computer model

Operating System: Exact OS and version

mPOP Model: Exact model

Part Number: Exact manufacturer SKU

Connection: USB-C or Bluetooth

Receipt Width: 58mm

Scanner: Required or not required

Customer Display: Required or not required

Payment Terminal: Exact payment solution

Payment Integration: Confirm with provider

Tablet Stand: Required configuration

Mounting: Counter or under-counter

Power: Suitable power connection
