Reliable 100 Scans/Second Handheld Laser Scanner with 4 mil Resolution, Extended UPC-A Reading Range and USB, RS232 or Keyboard Wedge Connectivity

The CipherLab 1502 is a corded handheld 1D laser barcode scanner designed for straightforward, reliable barcode capture in retail, healthcare, public-sector and general business environments.

Unlike the CipherLab 1500P, which uses linear-imaging technology, the 1502 uses a visible laser diode at 650 ± 15 nm. It provides 100 scans per second, 4 mil minimum resolution and a useful reading range for common 1D barcodes.

For a standard UPC-A 13 mil barcode, CipherLab specifies a reading distance of approximately 1.5 to 51.5 cm, giving operators flexibility when scanning products at checkout counters, stock-receiving stations and other fixed work areas.

The 1502 is a corded scanner, making it particularly suitable where dependable fixed-workstation operation is preferred over battery-powered wireless mobility.

It supports common 1D symbologies including Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, GS1 DataBar, Interleaved 2 of 5, ISBT-128, UPC, EAN and GS1-128, among others.

1D Laser Scanning Technology

The defining feature of the CipherLab 1502 is its laser scanning engine.

CipherLab specifies a:

Visible laser diode at 650 ± 15 nm

for reading supported linear barcodes.

For organizations already using traditional 1D barcode workflows, the 1502 provides a familiar laser-based scanning architecture without adding unnecessary 2D or wireless functionality.

100 Scans per Second

The 1502 provides a specified scan rate of:

100 scans/second

This is designed for everyday commercial 1D barcode capture.

Potential applications include:

  • Retail checkout
  • Product lookup
  • Stock receiving
  • Inventory identification
  • Document processing
  • Healthcare supply identification
  • Public-sector counters
  • General business data capture

Maximum scan rate is a manufacturer specification and should not be interpreted as the number of complete transactions an operator can process each second.

4 Mil Resolution

CipherLab specifies a minimum barcode resolution of:

4 mil

This allows the 1502 to read appropriately printed high-density 1D barcodes within its supported specifications.

For Code 39 at 4 mil, CipherLab specifies an approximate depth of field of:

1–4 cm

Barcode readability depends on the actual:

  • Symbology
  • X-dimension
  • Print quality
  • Contrast
  • Surface
  • Scanning angle
  • Distance
  • Lighting

For application-critical small barcodes, testing the actual barcode before a larger deployment is recommended.

Extended UPC-A Reading Range

For a standard:

UPC-A 13 mil

barcode, CipherLab specifies an approximate depth of field of:

1.5–51.5 cm

This provides useful flexibility at a checkout or workstation because the operator can scan many conventional retail barcodes without placing the scanner directly against the label.

Code 39 Reading

CipherLab specifies approximately:

Code 39, 4 mil: 1–4 cm

Code 39, 5 mil: 1–12 cm

The actual reading distance varies according to barcode characteristics and operating conditions.

Retail POS Applications

The CipherLab 1502 is particularly relevant to traditional 1D retail barcode scanning.

Potential applications include:

  • UPC/EAN product scanning
  • Checkout
  • Price lookup
  • Product identification
  • Returns processing
  • Stock lookup
  • Inventory operations
  • Supported 1D membership or account barcodes

Its corded architecture can be useful at fixed counters where wireless roaming is unnecessary.

Inventory & Stock Receiving

The 1502 can support compatible inventory software for tasks such as:

  • Goods receiving
  • Stock checking
  • Product identification
  • Inventory updates
  • Item lookup
  • Replenishment
  • Internal stock movement

The scanner captures barcode data; the connected inventory, POS or ERP application determines how that data is processed.

Healthcare Applications

CipherLab positions the 1500 Series for healthcare as well as retail and public-sector use.

The 1502 can be considered where the healthcare workflow uses compatible 1D barcodes, for example appropriate:

  • Supply identification
  • Inventory control
  • Asset-related scanning
  • Document identification
  • Supported patient-data workflows

However, healthcare buyers should verify the barcode format carefully.

Many modern pharmaceutical and healthcare workflows use 2D Data Matrix or other 2D symbols. The CipherLab 1502 is a 1D laser scanner and should not be selected when 2D capture is required.

Pharmacy Applications

The 1502 supports several 1D symbologies relevant to general product and pharmaceutical workflows, including applicable:

  • Code 39
  • Code 128
  • GS1-128
  • ISBT-128
  • Italian Pharmacode
  • French Pharmacode

If the required medicine packaging uses Data Matrix or another 2D code, choose an appropriate 2D imager instead.

Public-Sector & Service Counters

A corded laser scanner can also be useful at fixed administrative or service counters where supported 1D barcodes are used for:

  • Document identification
  • Reference numbers
  • Account lookup
  • Application processing
  • Record retrieval

Compatibility depends on the barcode format and host application.

Continuous Scanning Mode

The CipherLab 1502 supports:

Continuous scanning mode

This can be useful in appropriately configured workflows where the scanner needs to remain ready for successive barcode presentations.

The 1502 should not be confused with the 1500P's auto-sense functionality; CipherLab lists the 1502 specifically with continuous-mode hands-free scanning.

Hands-Free Operation

CipherLab lists stand accessories for the 1500 Series, including:

  • Hands-free adjustable stand
  • Three-way desk/wall/auto-sense stand
  • Optional weighted base

Accessory availability and functionality should be confirmed for the intended 1502 installation.

A stand should not be assumed to be included with every scanner package.

Corded Connectivity

The CipherLab 1502 is designed for corded operation.

CipherLab lists cable options including:

  • USB
  • RS232
  • Keyboard Wedge

The required interface should be selected according to the host equipment.

  • Surface
  • Orientation
  • Direct light

It should not be interpreted as a guarantee of scanning every barcode under direct sunlight.

Scanning Angles

CipherLab specifies:

Pitch: ±65°

Skew: ±50°

This provides practical tolerance when a barcode is not presented perfectly perpendicular to the scanner.

1.2 m Drop Resistance

CipherLab specifies the 1502 to withstand:

Multiple 1.2 m / 3.9 ft drops onto concrete

This provides protection against typical accidental drops in commercial use.

Drop-test specifications describe manufacturer test conditions and do not mean the scanner cannot be damaged.

IP30 Protection

The CipherLab 1502 carries an:

IP30

ingress-protection rating.

This makes it appropriate for normal indoor commercial environments but not for applications requiring meaningful water protection.

Do not treat IP30 as suitable for:
