Legacy Honeywell VoyagerCG Single-Line Laser Scanner with CodeGate™ Technology

Honeywell Voyager MS9540 Barcode Scanner | The Honeywell VoyagerCG MS9540 is a legacy handheld single-line laser barcode scanner developed for standard 1D barcode data capture.

The scanner was widely suited to applications such as retail point of sale, menu scanning, document processing and inventory-related barcode identification.

Important product status: Honeywell has officially discontinued the VoyagerCG 9540. Honeywell lists the product discontinuation date as 30 June 2024 and the service/support discontinuation date as 31 December 2027.

This page is therefore maintained primarily for legacy product identification, specifications, existing-system requirements and replacement guidance.

Overview

The Honeywell VoyagerCG MS9540 combines single-line laser scanning with CodeGate™ technology.

Honeywell states that the scanner uses automatic infrared activation and can decode standard 1D barcodes, including GS1 DataBar™. CodeGate provides additional operator control for applications where a specific barcode needs to be selected before its data is transmitted.

Key Features

  • Single-line laser scanning technology
  • Standard 1D barcode decoding
  • GS1 DataBar support
  • CodeGate™ technology
  • Automatic infrared activation
  • Handheld operation
  • Fixed presentation operation when mounted in its stand
  • 650 nm visible laser
  • Multiple historical host-interface configurations
  • Designed for conventional 1D barcode applications

What Is CodeGate™?

CodeGate is an important feature of the VoyagerCG MS9540.

The scanner can detect and decode a barcode while the operator positions the visible laser line over the intended code. CodeGate then provides control over when the decoded information is transmitted to the connected host.

Honeywell specifically identifies CodeGate as useful for menu-scanning applications.

1D Barcode Capability

The MS9540 is a 1D barcode scanner.

It is appropriate for conventional linear barcode applications such as product identification, asset identification and other systems using supported 1D symbologies.

Important Limitation

The standard VoyagerCG MS9540 should not be represented as a modern 2D area imager.

It is not the appropriate choice where the requirement includes modern 2D formats such as:

  • QR Code
  • Data Matrix
  • PDF417
  • Other applications specifically requiring 2D imaging

A current 2D scanner should be considered for those requirements.

Applications

Existing MS9540 scanners may still be encountered in:

  • Retail POS systems
  • Product barcode identification
  • Inventory applications
  • Libraries
  • Document-processing environments
  • Menu scanning
  • Legacy business systems
  • Existing equipment replacement requirements

Application suitability depends on the required barcode symbology, host interface and software environment.

Existing MS9540 Installations

A discontinued product does not mean that an existing working scanner automatically becomes unusable.

Businesses with established MS9540 installations may continue using their equipment where it remains operational and compatible with their systems.

However, organisations maintaining older installations should consider:

  • Future replacement availability
  • Interface and cable compatibility
  • Spare scanner availability
  • Operating-system changes
  • Application compatibility
  • Manufacturer support lifecycle
  • Migration to current barcode-scanning technology

Honeywell MS9540 Replacement Guidance

Honeywell's discontinued-product information identifies the Voyager 1200g as a replacement for the VoyagerCG 9540. Honeywell's broader retirement information also references Voyager 1400g and Voyager XP 1470g in relation to the retirement of the VoyagerCG 9540.

The correct replacement should nevertheless be selected according to the actual application rather than model name alone.

Before replacing an MS9540, check:

  • Required 1D or 2D barcode formats
  • USB / RS-232 / other interface requirements
  • Existing POS software
  • Host operating system
  • Stand or handheld usage
  • Cable requirements
  • Barcode size and quality
  • Screen-reading requirements
  • Existing application configuration

Buyer Guidance

Consider the MS9540 when:

You specifically need the MS9540 for an existing installation or replacement requirement and a suitable unit is legitimately available.

Consider a current scanner when:

You are building a new system, require QR/2D scanning, need current-generation operating-system compatibility, or want a longer manufacturer product lifecycle.

Learn First. Decide Second. Buy Only If It Is Right for Your Needs.

Availability in the UAE

Because Honeywell has discontinued the VoyagerCG MS9540, NEOTECH® should not describe this model as normally stocked or readily available.

Any remaining availability should be confirmed individually.

Where available, customers should also confirm:

  • Exact model/configuration
  • Product condition
  • Included cable
  • Included stand
  • Interface type
  • Warranty applicable to the actual supplied unit

We should never imply that a discontinued unit is current factory production.
