Compact facial authentication terminal for compatible access control systems with IR-based live face detection, RFID and mobile credentials, Ethernet, RS-485, OSDP and Wiegand connectivity.

The Suprema FaceLite FL-DB is a compact facial authentication terminal designed for compatible physical access control and biometric identification environments.

FaceLite combines face authentication, RFID credentials and mobile credential support in a compact device that can be integrated with compatible access-control infrastructure.

The FL-DB incorporates an IR-based facial authentication system with Live Face Detection (LFD), a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 8GB Flash memory, 1GB RAM and a 2-inch color TFT LCD.

For access-control integration, the device provides 10/100Mbps Ethernet, RS-485, OSDP V2, Wiegand, two inputs, one relay and USB Host connectivity.

FaceLite also supports multiple credential technologies including 125kHz EM and selected 13.56MHz smart cards, along with NFC and BLE mobile credentials.

An important lifecycle consideration is that Suprema has discontinued production of the FL-DB. Suprema announced the FaceLite end-of-life in February 2024, with a last-order date of 8 August 2024 and an announced end-of-service date of 8 August 2027. Suprema identifies BioStation 3 BS3-DB as its successor.

Customers considering FaceLite today should therefore determine whether they specifically require an FL-DB for an existing installation or whether a current-generation Suprema solution is more appropriate.

What Is the Suprema FaceLite FL-DB?

The FaceLite FL-DB is a facial authentication and access-control terminal.

It can form part of an access-control system where a person's biometric facial template or another supported credential is used to authenticate access.

A simplified installation may operate as:

User

↓

Face / Card / Compatible Mobile Credential

↓

Suprema FaceLite FL-DB

↓

Access-Control Decision

↓

Door / Secure I/O / Access-Control Infrastructure

↓

Access Granted or Denied

The exact architecture depends on the access-control design, BioStar configuration, door hardware, controllers, security policies and credential type.

Face Recognition and Facial Authentication

The FL-DB uses facial biometric information for authentication.

During enrollment, the system creates biometric template information associated with an authorized user.

During authentication, the terminal captures facial information and performs the appropriate matching process according to the configured authentication mode.

Biometric performance should always be evaluated in the context of:

  • Enrollment quality
  • User positioning
  • Lighting
  • Installation height
  • Authentication configuration
  • System design
  • Environmental conditions

IR-Based Live Face Detection

FaceLite supports Live Face Detection (LFD).

Suprema describes its FaceLite LFD technology as IR-based and designed to help address spoofing attempts involving printed images and LCDs.

Live Face Detection is one security component within the biometric system and should not be interpreted as making an access-control installation immune to every possible spoofing or security attack.

Physical security should be designed as a complete system.

Important Camera Information

The FaceLite should not be described as a conventional visible-light surveillance camera.

Suprema's technical support documentation specifically distinguishes FaceLite from FaceStation 2 by explaining that FaceLite does not have a visual camera and displays an IR image when a user face is detected.

The device's imaging system is intended for its facial authentication function.

It should not be positioned as a CCTV or video-surveillance camera.

Processor and Memory

CPU: 1.2GHz Quad-Core

Flash Memory: 8GB

RAM: 1GB

The processing platform supports the terminal's biometric authentication and access-control functions.

Display

Display Type: 2-inch Color TFT LCD

Resolution: 320 × 240 pixels

The compact display provides user-facing information associated with terminal operation and authentication.

The old NEOTECH® description referred generally to a “touch screen.” This should not be retained because Suprema's specification identifies a 2-inch color TFT LCD but does not describe it as a touchscreen.

Facial Camera

Camera Type: CMOS

Camera Resolution: 720 × 480 pixels

IR Lens Angle: Diagonal 58°

IR LEDs: 8 × 940nm

These components form part of the FaceLite facial authentication system.

Face Capacity

Suprema's later FaceLite specification identifies:

Maximum Users: 30,000

Face Credential Capacity – 1:N: 4,000

Face Credential Capacity – 1:1: 30,000

Maximum Text Logs: 5,000,000

The distinction between 1:1 and 1:N matching is important when evaluating biometric capacity.

A statement such as “supports 30,000 face users” without explaining the matching mode can be misleading.

What Is 1:1 Face Matching?

In a 1:1 authentication workflow, the system compares the presented face against the biometric template associated with a claimed identity or credential.

Conceptually:

Credential / Claimed Identity

↓

Associated Face Template

↓

Presented Face

↓

1:1 Comparison

This reduces the biometric search space because the system is comparing against a specific identity.

What Is 1:N Face Matching?

In a 1:N identification workflow, the presented face is searched against a database of enrolled face credentials to identify a possible match.

Conceptually:

Presented Face

↓

Search Enrolled Face Database

↓

Identify Matching User

For the FaceLite FL-DB, the published 1:N face credential capacity is lower than the 1:1 capacity, which is why the intended authentication method should be considered during system planning.

RFID Credential Support

The FL-DB supports multiple RFID credential technologies.

These include:

125kHz:
EM

13.56MHz:
MIFARE
MIFARE Plus
DESFire EV1 / EV2
FeliCa

The exact card technology already used by an organization should be confirmed before replacing or expanding an existing access-control installation.

Mobile Credentials

The FaceLite FL-DB supports:

NFC

BLE

Mobile credential functionality depends on the applicable Suprema software, mobile credential environment, device firmware, smartphone and system configuration.

Support should therefore be verified against the intended current deployment rather than assumed solely from the presence of NFC or Bluetooth functionality.

Multi-Credential Access Control

Depending on system configuration, FaceLite can participate in an environment using multiple credential types, such as:

  • Face
  • RFID card
  • Mobile credential
  • PIN in supported authentication combinations

This can allow organizations to design authentication policies according to their security requirements.

The exact authentication combinations should be configured according to the applicable Suprema documentation and BioStar environment.

Ethernet Connectivity

Ethernet: 10/100Mbps

Auto MDI/MDI-X: Supported

Ethernet provides network connectivity between the FaceLite and compatible access-control infrastructure.

Network planning should consider:

  • IP addressing
  • Network segmentation
  • BioStar server connectivity
  • Cybersecurity policies
  • Firewall configuration
  • Device management
  • Physical network security

RS-485

The FL-DB provides:

1 × RS-485 channel

The channel can be configured according to the supported device architecture.

RS-485 can be relevant when integrating compatible Suprema access-control components.

OSDP V2

The FL-DB supports OSDP V2-compliant communication over its supported RS-485 architecture.

OSDP is commonly used in access-control environments for communication between compatible readers, terminals and controllers.

Compatibility should be confirmed with the intended controller and system configuration.

Wiegand

Wiegand: 1 channel

The interface can operate as input or output depending on configuration.

Wiegand can support integration with compatible access-control equipment, particularly in existing installations.

The exact signaling, credential format and controller compatibility should be verified before deployment.

Inputs and Relay

The FL-DB provides:

Inputs: 2

Relay: 1

These interfaces can support compatible access-control configurations.

The complete door-control architecture should be designed according to the security requirements of the site.

For higher-security installations, organizations should consider the placement of door-control relays and secure I/O components rather than relying solely on externally accessible terminal wiring.

USB

USB: USB 2.0 Host

USB functionality should be used according to the applicable Suprema configuration and maintenance documentation.

It should not be interpreted as a general-purpose computer USB interface.

Tamper Detection

Tamper: Supported

Tamper functionality can help the access-control system identify physical interference with the terminal when correctly configured.

Tamper detection is one component of physical security and should form part of a broader access-control design.

Crypto Chip

Crypto Chip: Supported

The FL-DB incorporates cryptographic hardware as part of its security architecture.

Suprema also describes FaceLite security features including AES-256 face-template encryption and secured TLS 1.2 communication.

Security still depends on correct installation, software configuration, credential management, network architecture and operational policies.

BioStar 2 Compatibility

FaceLite is supported within Suprema BioStar 2.

Suprema states that FaceLite became officially supported for connection to BioStar 2 from version 2.7.10.

BioStar can form part of the wider access-control environment used to:

  • Register devices
  • Configure users
  • Manage credentials
  • Configure access-control policies
  • Review events
  • Administer compatible Suprema devices

Software version, licensing and current product lifecycle should be verified for the intended installation.

Important: No Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi: Not Supported

This is important when planning installation.

The FaceLite FL-DB should not be purchased on the assumption that it can connect directly to a wireless LAN.

Ethernet is the specified network interface.

Important: No PoE

PoE: Not Supported

The FaceLite FL-DB requires its specified power arrangement and should not be assumed to receive operating power through its Ethernet connection.

Important: No Intercom

Intercom: Not Supported

Organizations requiring integrated intercom functionality should consider another device or a separate intercom system.

  • Time and attendance workflows when supported by the complete system

Suitability depends on the system architecture and current product lifecycle.

Time and Attendance Considerations

FaceLite can participate in compatible workforce and attendance environments through the applicable Suprema system.

However, the terminal itself should not be treated as a complete standalone HR or payroll solution.

A complete attendance environment may require:

  • User enrollment
  • BioStar software
  • Attendance configuration
  • Network connectivity
  • Reporting
  • HR integration
  • Payroll integration where required
  • Organizational policies

Compatibility with third-party attendance or payroll applications should be confirmed separately.

Purpose of Use

The Suprema FaceLite FL-DB was designed to provide compact facial authentication for compatible physical access-control environments.

Today, its most relevant use cases may include:

  • Maintaining an existing FaceLite deployment
  • Replacing an FL-DB in an established system
  • Expanding a compatible legacy installation where appropriate equipment remains available
  • Supporting an existing BioStar environment

For new projects, the product's discontinued status should be considered before selecting it.

Product Lifecycle: Important Information

Suprema announced the End of Life of FaceLite FL-DB on 8 February 2024.

The manufacturer's announced lifecycle is:

Product: FaceLite

Model: FL-DB

EOL Announcement: 8 February 2024
